As we have in years past, we will be hiking with members of the 183rd Tonkawa on New Year’s Day!
When: January 1st, 12:00 pm
Where: 8820 Big View Drive, Austin
River Place Nature Trail is located in the River Place neighborhood. Exit RR2222 onto River Place Blvd, follow River Place Blvd to the end, and turn right into Big View Trail. (There are 2 other trailheads along River Place Blvd- these are NOT where we are meeting.) 8820 Big View Dr is where the Boardwalk Kiosk is, located on the very bottom of the map below.
Parking is available along the street and in the parking lot of the playground across from the pond. We will meet on the boardwalk of the pond, which is at the Panther Hollow Trailhead. We will hike the Panther Hollow and Little Fern Trail and back, covering about 2 miles. We will not be hiking the Canyon Trail, as it is much more technical. This trail is not stroller friendly.
What to wear: The weather forecast is calling for clear, sunny skies, and a high of 50. It will likely be in the mid to high 40’s at noon. Remember to layer, layer, layer!! It will be cold when we get started, but we will likely warm up pretty quick, and scouts may want to start removing layers. Don’t forget hats, gloves, and scarves. For those that tend to stay chilled, hand warmers may be helpful. We strongly recommend sturdy, water resistant shoes. The trail is hard-packed, with occasional rocks, tree roots, and mud. We will be hiking along and crossing over streams. A spare pair of socks is suggested in the event your scout decides to get wet.
What to bring: Water, snacks, pack, and anything else you and your scout may need. We recommend scouts pack and carry their 10 essentials for practice.
This hike is not an official scout event. Scout leaders will not be on duty, so parents are required to supervise their scouts. Scout behavior, however, is still expected.
